In Conversation: The Earth Beneath Our Feet

Overview

For the second year in a row, Tinworks Art: In Conversation brings together artists, writers, scientists, and creative thinkers from various fields to discuss the topics of our time. From March to July, Tinworks will convene thought leaders from the region and beyond for a series of conversations titled The Earth Beneath Our Feet. The conversations have been developed in consideration of Tinworks’ 2025 exhibition season, running June 21 - October 18, which will feature ceramic, clay, and earthen artworks by regional and international, historical and contemporary artists, and a continued activation of Tinworks’ field by ecological artist Agnes Denes. Development of topics and speaker invitations for this second series have been in collaboration with Mary Stein and Mary Murphy.

Tinworks Art: In Conversation are ticketed evening events, open to the public, hosted at The Rialto in downtown Bozeman. Doors at 7pm, event at 7:30pm.

About the Speakers

LESLEY M. GILMORE

Lesley M. Gilmore is a preservation architect in Gallatin Gateway, MT. She has exercised her passion for our built past for more than thirty years, integrating her love for learning with writing building histories and planning restorations. She dives into a spectrum of historic and physical clues - precise details, building materials, construction methods, stylistic characteristics, owners’ and users’ preferences, etc. – and applies them to constructing building chronologies and treatment plans. Lesley relishes crafting architectural descriptions that make the built environment appeal to others. She is the author of Canyon Village in Yellowstone: The Model for Mission 66, as well as many articles and reports that guide the treatment of our cultural resources.

CRYSTAL ALEGRIA

Crystal Alegria is the Director of The Extreme History Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making history accessible and engaging to the public. She is a Community Historian and Storyteller. With a passion for historical storytelling and preservation, Crystal leads initiatives that bring untold and underrepresented histories to light. With a background in public and community history, Crystal has worked extensively to bridge the gap between academic research and community engagement. She co-founded The Extreme History Project to foster a deeper appreciation of history through walking tours, lectures, workshops, and outreach programs. Crystal is also the co-host of The Dirt on the Past Podcast and co-producer of the docuseries The Story of Us: The Women Who Shaped Montana, which highlights the impactful but often overlooked contributions of women in Montana’s history. Her work emphasizes the power of place-based history and cultural heritage, encouraging people to connect with the past in meaningful ways.
